    $ grep XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="/mnt/shared/downloads"

    $ shutdown -r # rebooting...

    $ grep XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs
    XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/"

    Why */mnt/shared/downloads* has been replaced with *$HOME/*?

    I would guess because /mnt/shared/downloads is not within your home
    directory.

    Maybe:

    1) restore /user-dirs.dirs to

    XDG_DOWNLOAD_DIR="$HOME/Downloads"

    2) remove existing directory

    rmdir ~/Downloads

    3) replace with symbolic link

    ls -s /mnt/shared/downloads ~/Downloads
