Netflix developing animated musical about Cinderella's stepsisters
Coming off from last month's debut of Moxie, Golden Globe winner
Amy Poehler has found her next project with Netflix in the form
of the animated musical Steps, a reimagining of the classic
Cinderella story centered around her two stepsisters with Student
Academy Award winner Alyce Tzue set to make her directorial debut
on the film.
"We are so excited to be working with Netflix and the great Riki,
Kate and Alyce on this joyful and much-needed story," Poehler
said in a statement.
Steps is expected to tell a fresh new spin on the Cinderella
story with two young Asian leads, following the two stepsisters
who, after getting overlooked for marriage by the prince, embark
on an epic journey that will help them realize that their own
perfect fairytales might be different from what they originally
"Our step-sisters are a pair of young Asian immigrants to a
fairytale world, and their journey navigating the pressures of
their kingdom to ultimately arrive at their true dream is a
story that resonates deep inside my heart," Tzue said.
"Especially in light of the terrible acts of erasure against the
Asian community, I am grateful to be working with this
incredible team on a project where I feel so seen. We can't wait
to bring Steps to the world."
The film is being written by Riki Lindhome from a story she
co-wrote with Garfunkel and Oates partner Kate Micucci, with
both also writing songs for the project and serving as
executive producers. The animated musical will be produced by
Poehler and Kim Lessing through their Paper Kite Productions
banner alongside The Croods' Jane Hartwell.
This project marks the strengthening partnership between Poehler
and Netflix as they previously worked together on the acclaimed
dramedy series Russian Doll and the 2019 comedy film Wine
Country, which was the comedian's feature directorial debut.
